Art Bras:

The time has come for us to think about Breast Cancer Awareness month here at The Stash!  Last year we were part of the window decorating contest, and this year we will feature a silent auction of Artful Bras, made by our fabulous Fairbanks artists!  🙂  Is this something you are interested to participate in?  Please let us know, we are open to accepting Art Bras from you too!

What is an Art Bra you ask???
“An art bra is basically an artistically decorated bra; an embellished bra. Art bras are fun – they are popular items for artists to make for Breast Cancer fundraisers. What you do is take a regular bra – usually padded – and cover it with fabric or beads or paint – or all three plus whatever else comes to mind. Some art bras have a theme, some are serious, some are funny, some are just decorated and given a name.”  Ask the Crafter

Please contact us for more information, as well as to sign up!  We need to have a good picture of how many bras we will be working with.  This will be our featured medium for October First Friday, and BCDC of Fairbanks will be the recipients of our October Non-Profit.  All proceeds from the silent auction of these bras will be donated to them.

Here is our first blog by one of our WONDERFUL artist!

The Importance of Knowing Things and The Utilitarianism of Craft

by:  Caitlin Montague-W.

Long-gone are the days of saving scraps, mending, and reworking; so much so that the entire idea of crafting or perhaps the idea of being a craftsman is no longer looked upon with a sense of utilitarian, homemaking longing. Long winter evenings are rarely spent on handiworks, and a rainy day is more often an excuse to watch television than start and finish a project. I often wonder if the ability to create, fix and make-do even a treasured value in this day of Blackberries and Wal-Mart.

It is part of the human condition to create, it has been a matter of necessity to make things for a household, and it is a luxury to take time to craft a beautiful thing for a gift. What we make as craftsmen is an extension of our soul, it is part of our heart, passed through our hands and into a garment, onto canvas, or through a tool to a turning lathe. As craftsmen, we call upon a long line of talent before us, and as we use modern conveniences to make our crafting lives easier, one wonders if the crafter is allowing the technology to take over the technique.

We live in a world where baskets and blankets can be made in factories, in a fully automated way devoid of human hands, human hearts, and stories. The stitches and weavings and carvings passed down and developed through generations have been infringed upon by mechanisms. This not only degrades the crafts, but the craftsmen themselves. We should not be ashamed if we can only create simple, plain things, we should not be ashamed if we are able create beautiful things, what we should be ashamed of is the lack of want to learn, and the impulse to buy something crafted by machine.

Perhaps we are too busy in this life to craft, especially to craft simple things for the home, or to mend. Where have all the homemakers gone? For those with no time, I hope they find comfort in a quilt stitched without a human touch. For me, I hope to be surrounded by things with a story, made by a craftsman who takes pride in their work.

It is strange to think that the same mechanisms that provided the western world with the luxuries of free time, would then devoid us of the wont of crafting expression. As a society we must relearn and take back those skills that help make a home a home. Crafting should not become obsolete, it is important to know how to make things, and it is equally important to make them, allow others to see you making them, and to teach those others to make their own. It is in this way that we connect with each other, enriching our own lives and the lives of others with things that you cannot get on the Internet, and making bonds that go beyond the TV.

If you would like to see more of Caitlin’s work, come by the shop!

Stitch Out! We will be preparing lap blankets for The Fairbanks Alzheimer’s Association. There will be 2 events coming up:

  • Wed. April 15th from 5-8 p.m. (Cutting of blocks & sorting stacks)
  • Sat. April 18th from 12-4 p.m. (Sewing blocks together)

We have not had a lot of material turned in, so this may go faster than we anticipated. If you have a chance to go through your fabric stash, we would GREATLY appreciate it. We seriously need a lot more material, any material that has a great texture, color, pattern and can hold up to many washings would be perfect! There is a use for material in larger quantities to that we can use for the backing of the blankets too.

We are taking the shop to the 4th Annual Fairbanks Summer Kid Fair!  If you are out and about this Saturday, April 11th, stop by and see us.  We have all new summer classes that you can sign up for!  They are really cool & pretty exciting, and this will be their debut!  🙂  The Kid Fair will be open from 10-2 p.m. located in the Nordale Elementary gym.

Over 50 different local organizations

This is a ‘one-stop shop’ for Fairbanks families when it comes to summer activities for kids.  This community wide event showcases many children’s activities, classes and camps.  This will allow families to see what is available in the Greater Fairbanks Area for the upcoming summer.

Sign the kids up & purchase the needed supplies too!

Well, we worked like dogs this weekend…  And we got it, well at least 80% of the new shop up & going.  🙂

Friday was crazy!  The old shop was completely empty by 3 p.m. and all moved over to the new place.  Papa Stash (i.e. Russ) was a HUGE help here!  Not only did he move stuff, but then he set up our computer system too!  If you know me (Janie) then you know that stuff is way over my head…

Bre came to help & even brought her stroller to move some things over too, her and Katelynn (Robyn’s daughter) did wonders with their wheels.  🙂  Laura brought my dolly over on her lunch break!  Yep, anything with wheels was much appreciated.  Natasha (Robyn’s daughter) & Robyn stuffed boxes, Rachael, Janie, Jolie, Ali, Thane & Mike all moved things!

Here are some

of the progress of the day…

Saturday was much of the same…  Well, unpacking rather!  New (to us) cabinets came, backroom was made more kid friendly for all our little one’s.  Pizza party, unpacking, shifting of the shit from one place to another…  That really is what this felt like after a while.

Sunday, the day of hanging.  Not each other, but pictures.  🙂  Many of the things went UP on the walls on Sunday…  Photos, paintings, curtains, shelves, hooks, hangers, and all.  It is all melting together & starting to work out.  We still can’t believe how much more room we have in this new place.  It has even worked out to leave most of the carpet free & clear for all of Rachael’s yoga classes too!

Today I am covering the back of the desk that we are using for checking out customers.  Filling storage shelves in the backroom.

This week, I will get the base cabinets & countertops for the sewing center.  Re-working the brochures to be ready for First Friday & our Re-Grand Opening Friday night.

Whew…  It was a whirlwind, and I definitely need a NAP!

Okay so today is the day…  The day that it hit me we have only 10 days left to opening!  AND that includes today.

What to do?  What to do?

Get to work!  That’s what…

I must say that there are a MILLION things ‘to do’ going through my head, but I have to stop myself and be so grateful for having Rachael & Laura to share this with.  To me, it has made ALL the difference in the world.  It is a dream come true, that I was to scared to do on my own.

Thank you girls for pushing me to the next level in my life!

Here are some updated photos after our work yesterday…

Okay, so it was a Holiday weekend with beautiful weather & what did Rachael & I do?  Clean a gross floor & lay tile!  🙂  But in the end, I must say I am impressed!  It makes the space shape up and seem bigger just by having a continuous floor in there.

Rachael’s men, Mike & River, came by to check things out.  River got to work right away sticking screws into the peg board.  🙂

Laura has family in town, but she did tear herself away to come and help some too!  Then all the Stashette’s took a break and went to Sam’s!  Shopping was in order…  Got a new fridge, surveyed the cash registers and office supplies some.  Wow, we are really going to do this!

I know that I was lost for a bit in my crazy Alaska life…

But then I was found!  🙂

Now I am beginning to wonder, “What in the world am I doing?”

🙂

This week was so calm at work, what to do with myself only working full-time this week?  Guess I was bored, so my friend Rachael & I decided to mix things up a bit!  We went to look at a store front space for The Stash!!!!

I am beginning to believe if you want something done, you just have to do it yourself and MAKE it happen!

The space, it is rough, but nothing that a little paint & elbow grease can’t take care of!  Right?  Paint, the perfect cover for all things dingy.  There is a window to the street though, and all utilities are paid!  Woo Hoo…  That is big up here where our fuel bills keep getting higher & higher.

So now, I need to finish up the Business Plan, see who would like to partner in this venture, find artists/craftsman to consign & seek out a small grant/loan to kick start this business.  (I am actually a nervous wreck about this!)

Could we actually be in business by June 1st?  Or should it be later?

How does one know if this is the right step to take?  Do we just jump off that cliff and see if we crash or soar?

Whew, back to work for now!

Cheers
