Art Bras:

The time has come for us to think about Breast Cancer Awareness month here at The Stash!  Last year we were part of the window decorating contest, and this year we will feature a silent auction of Artful Bras, made by our fabulous Fairbanks artists!  🙂  Is this something you are interested to participate in?  Please let us know, we are open to accepting Art Bras from you too!

What is an Art Bra you ask???
“An art bra is basically an artistically decorated bra; an embellished bra. Art bras are fun – they are popular items for artists to make for Breast Cancer fundraisers. What you do is take a regular bra – usually padded – and cover it with fabric or beads or paint – or all three plus whatever else comes to mind. Some art bras have a theme, some are serious, some are funny, some are just decorated and given a name.”  Ask the Crafter

Please contact us for more information, as well as to sign up!  We need to have a good picture of how many bras we will be working with.  This will be our featured medium for October First Friday, and BCDC of Fairbanks will be the recipients of our October Non-Profit.  All proceeds from the silent auction of these bras will be donated to them.

Check these sites for ideas!

My friend Jennifer sent me the link to her new blog!  Jen is one of the artists in the shop, does wonderful mixed media work, and will be helping Jolie refinish her desk (at a snail’s pace).  We have talked at length about The Stash while she is refinishing Hilda.  What a neat process to watch an artist work on something from begining to end.  But this little zinger was news to me today!

Jennifer started a blog, and we were her first entry called: Paradise Found 🙂

I can’t tell you how unbelievably touched by this.  And, well, the write up is pretty amazing too.  I think that so much of my day (and probably Robyn & Rachael’s too) is spent just getting the job done.  We are working full steam ahead to just keep up with this momentum at the shop, and I don’t know that we have realized the magnitude of The Stash.

If you can, please join and read her blog entry!  I would love to hear your comments & feedback as to if this has been your thoughts/experience as well.

I will be holding my breath until I hear back from you…  🙂

Yep, we did it again…  🙂

Our local newspaper, Fairbanks Daily Newsminer, had an article about the shop last Sunday!  🙂  They did a great job & made the store sound wonderful…  Well, it is wonderful!  Okay I know that I am biased here.

Things are still moving right along at the store.  Although I think that Rachael & I are in denial about the quantity of work that needs done this month.

So many things have changed in the last 2 weeks.

  • Our partner, Laura, has moved on.  😦  She received a job offer that she couldn’t refuse.  We are happy for her, but miss her all the same.  I did coerce her into helping me at The Holiday Market Place in November, so we will have a day of play there.
  • School started, woo hoo!  But that in itself is another hurdle that we have to jump.  All the after-school activites that our kids are in can put a pinch on our now 2 person shop.  I think it will all be fine once Rachael & I (and our husbands) get some sort of routine down.
  • We have 82 artists now…  Mind boggling isn’t it?
  • We are moving the shop in 22 days, denial is a beautiful thing.  Secretly I am hoping that the painting & moving fairies will show up and do it all for us.
  • Rachael & I have acquired a new partner!  Robyn Neilko will be joining our sassy bunch to bring us up to 3 Stashette’s again.  Yeah…  Robyn brings a ton of personality & vision to the shop and will make for a wonderful new addition.  She has been a Director for Pampered Chef for a while now, and is also one of our artists.  She makes fused glass jewelry in her spare time.

Off for now…  To much work to do and to little time!  🙂

First Friday Trunk Show at The Stash

July 4, 2008

5-9 p.m.

544 3rd Avenue

Sisters, Terri Austin & Shelley Doyal will be coming to have a Blue Flamingo Designs trunk show at The Stash!  They make some pretty incredible clothing that you will just have to see to believe!  Terri & Shelley produce wearable clothing made from common household materials, just used in a different way.

Terri mentioned today that they have everything from jackets to complete outfits made from materials that come from stores such as Home Depot!

So we would like to invite you to come and challenge your thinking in garment production and sewing.  I can’t wait to see what things she will pull out of her hat for this…

Well, It was just a short 3 weeks ago that we opened our doors here at The Stash… Where has the time gone? For me, personally, I LOVE my time at the shop. It goes by super fast and I enjoy our lively space and customers immensely.

So many things to be grateful for too! Like the great partners, Laura & Rachael. As well as the 47 artists that have consigned their beautiful artwork here at our shop! It is an honor to represent such a creative community here in Fairbanks. On top of that, there is a very strong creative youth movement coming through. Actually 5 out of our 47 are under the age of 15, isn’t that neat.

Classes are beginning after July 1st. The classroom is in the process of being finished up. Sewing machines will be available for rent by the hour, the sewing lounge for hand work is up and ready for those wanting a place to sit & stitch. Party rentals are coming up too!

There are some regular things that The Stash will be doing every month, First Friday’s here in Fairbanks are very popular. So we will join in the circuit of the art galleries and feature a new artist or two every month. Rachael will be teaching a kids Yarn-n-Yoga class every Monday & Wednesday. Then as we grow, we will keep adding to the calendar. It would be nice to have some of the local guilds schedule some of their meetings here at the shop.

Back to work for now!

So here is the skinny:

  • Auction will begin on Tuesday, June 17, 2008
  • Bidding will begin at $300
  • This will be a silent auction
  • All bids should be made at The Stash (located at 544 3rd Avenue)
  • Auction will end on Friday, July 4, 2008 at 7 p.m.
Photos coming tomorrow when I get to the shop!

Wahoo!  Laura called this evening to say today was the day!  The 2nd highest day in sales so far, the first being grand opening…  We are so excited, Jenny Day’s painting “Foxy” and some of Terry Glenndinings paintings sold!  From what I gather, they were interested in Jen Otey’s originals that are not for sale right now, so we will have to talk to her about getting more of her items to sell!

These types of days make us all so happy, not only will they help us make rent (important) but it helps to solidify the fact that The Stash and our concept of shop local, buy handmade is important to others as well.  Our goal of having a shop for a creative community is working, having a place where people can explore artistic mediums, take classes and shop is taking shape!  I love it.

Now we are tasked with filling the holes on the walls.  A part of me is sad though…  We all liked ‘Foxy’ so much, and I didn’t even get to say good bye!  🙂  But it is a good thing too!  Because it makes room for more wonderful art!

(Fairbanks Artists are you out there???  We need your art!  Things are selling, and we need to fill up the walls.)

So what will be next?  Something large?  Color?  Black and White?  3 dimensional?  Options are endless in art.

Lastly we have our very first class at The Stash booked on Friday…  Jen Otey will be teaching a Touch Drawing class on August 16th!  So if you are interested in this please come and sign up, spots will be going fast and there is only room for 10!

Since Friday, we have been in a whirlwind it seems. A bit of let down tired that is for sure… 🙂 Can’t imagine why? Getting the boutique cranked out in 3 weeks was a lot of work (3 moms, 8 kids, and a few husbands thrown in there for the manly stuff), especially if you saw it ‘before‘ we converted it over.

Now that the store is open, we have been spending some time cleaning, resting, delighting ourselves with the customers as they come through. So nice to hear all the great feedback from them. The Stashettes feel pretty honored to carry the artwork we have AND be able to represent the artists here in our community. As I sit here now, we have 37 different artists represented in the store. Pretty cool huh? Even some are writing in their blogs about us, see here

Our next hurdle you ask? Starting to find artists who would like to teach some classes! I am putting information together, and would love your feedback!

  • What kind of classes are you interested in taking?
  • What kind of classes are you interested in teaching?
  • What fees should we pay the teachers?
  • Class sizes?

Oh! Do I hear a challenge or contest coming on? I will put my thinking cap on about it, and see what I can do for a contest. There is also our signage that needs work! We need to do another folding sign for 2nd Street, and something above our window. Sigh, oh and the painting of the shingles outside. The list never ends it seems. 🙂

Okay, enough! I have to get back to work. We recieved more candy from Gretchen’s Creations today, so need to get it tagged! (For those that are local, we have more caramels in!!! 🙂 )

Thank you to all of you for posting comments & keeping up with my blogs. Your support has been so important to Laura, Rachael & myself.

Happy Summer!

I Took The Handmade Pledge!
